Augusta Premier Kickball Official Rulebook

Our league was created by players, for players, with a focus on organization, transparency, sportsmanship, competition, and community.

These rules exist to create a consistent playing experience, promote player safety, and ensure fair competition throughout the season.

All players, captains, and league officials are expected to know and follow these rules.

Rules Differences

While many rules remain familiar, there are a few notable differences:

Section 1: League Philosophy

Spirit of the Rule

Augusta Premier Kickball recognizes that no rulebook can account for every possible situation.

Any situation not specifically addressed within these rules shall be resolved according to the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship, player safety, and the best interests of the league.

The goal of every ruling should be to preserve the integrity of competition while maintaining the fun, welcoming, and community-focused environment that defines Augusta Premier Kickball.

Core Principles

• Respect: Respect teammates, opponents, officials, spectators, and league staff at all times.
• Sportsmanship: Competition is encouraged. Poor sportsmanship is not.
• Fun: While winning is important, creating a positive player experience is the league’s primary objective.
• Community: We’re building more than a kickball league. We’re building friendships, connections, and a community players look forward to being part of every season.

Section 2: League Governance

At Augusta Premier Kickball, we believe the best leagues are built with their players—not just for them.

To ensure every team has a voice, the league utilizes a Captain’s Council to assist with league governance, rule interpretation, and dispute resolution. The Council is intended to include one representative from each team, providing balanced feedback from across the league.

The Captain’s Council may review:

• Rule interpretations and disputes
• Sportsmanship concerns
• Player discipline matters
• Proposed rule modifications
• League improvement recommendations

The League Commissioner serves as the Council facilitator and may cast a vote only in the event of a tie.

How It Works

Council members are included in a dedicated group text for league communication. Throughout the season, game-related incidents, questions, and proposals will be submitted through a standardized feedback form. Council members will review each matter independently and provide anonymous feedback to encourage honest, unbiased decisions.

Once all feedback has been received, the results will be reviewed collectively and a final decision will be made.

Council decisions are final unless new information becomes available that materially affects the outcome.

Section 3: Team Requirements

Team Rosters

• Maximum roster size: 18 players
• Recommended roster size: 12–15 players
• All players must complete registration and waiver requirements

Minimum Players

• A team must have at least nine (9) players to begin a game (4 must be female).
• With opposing Team Captains approval, a team can also start with eight (8) players (3 must be female), but will receive an automatic out when the missing female’s position in the lineup appears.

Player Eligibility

• Players may only appear on one roster per season.
• All players must be registered before participating.
• Unregistered players are ineligible unless participating as a sub, which are required to sign a waiver before participation.

Section 4: Equipment

Official League Ball

• Augusta Premier Kickball utilizes the official Mikasa (P850K)  Official World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA) 8.5 inch ball (red) for all league games.
• League-issued game balls must be used during all regular season and playoff games.

Footwear

• Metal cleats are prohibited.
• Athletic shoes, molded cleats, and turf shoes are permitted.
• Molded cleats or turf shoes are highly recommended.

Section 5: Field Dimensions

• Bases: 60 feet apart
• Pitching Rubber: 42 feet from home plate
• Safety Base at First Base whenever possible
• Outfield co-ed line/boundaries determined by field conditions

Section 6: Gameplay

Game Length

Games consist of:

• Seven (7) innings
• Or fifty (50) minutes
• No new inning may begin after the time limit expires during the regular reason. Tied games will end in a tie. Only in playoffs will games go into extra innings.
• The inning in progress will be completed.

Mercy Rule

• To promote sportsmanship and maintain a positive player experience, a game shall be considered complete if a team leads by ten (10) or more runs after four (4) completed innings.
• The winning team shall receive credit for the victory and all runs scored through the conclusion of the game.

Pitching Rules

• Pitches must be rolled.
• Excessive bouncing is prohibited.
• The ball should remain reasonably flat and playable.
• Umpires may issue warnings or call illegal pitches at their discretion.
• For those who played in Augusta Sports Leagues, the “Competitive Pitching Rule” applies for Augusta Premier Kickball.

Pitcher’s Possession Rule

To promote consistent game flow and reduce unnecessary disputes, time is considered called once the pitcher gains possession of the ball and makes a clear attempt to return to the pitching area. The pitching area is defined as within six (6) feet of the pitching rubber.

• Runners who have not committed to advancing* must return to the last base legally occupied.
• Runners who are more than halfway to the next base when time is called may be awarded that base at the umpire’s discretion.
• Once time has been called, no additional advancement or plays may occur.

This rule is intended to keep the game moving, eliminate unnecessary “gotcha” plays, and create a consistent dead-ball situation throughout the league.

*Committed to Advance: A runner is considered committed when, in the umpire’s judgment, they have clearly and intentionally advanced toward the next base before time is called. Hesitation or movement alone does not constitute commitment.

Kicking Rules

• All kicks must occur behind home plate.
• Bunting is prohibited (males only).
• Intentional double-kicks are outs.
• Foul balls count as strikes.
• Three strikes equal an out.
• Four balls equal a walk.

Catcher’s Positioning & Interference

• The catcher must position themselves behind the kicker and may not obstruct the kicker’s ability to legally kick the ball.
• If field conditions make it unreasonable or unsafe to stand directly behind the kicker, the catcher may position themselves as close to directly behind the kicker as reasonably possible.
• If catcher interference occurs, the umpire may award first base to the kicker and advance runners as necessary.

Section 7: Base Running

Safety Base

The runner should use the safety base on close plays at first base.

The defensive player should use the primary base.

The safety base exists to reduce collisions and improve player safety.

Running Rules

The following running rules apply throughout the season:

• No Leading Off: Runners must remain in contact with their base until the ball is legally kicked.
• No Stealing: Runners may not advance to the next base until the ball has been kicked.
• Running Through First Base: A runner who intends only to run through first base must veer to the right after crossing the bag. If the runner turns to the left or otherwise indicates an intent to advance to second base, the defensive team may attempt to tag the runner. If the tag is made before the runner safely returns to first base, the runner shall be declared out.
• Overthrows: Runners may advance at their own risk on any live-ball overthrow.
• Sliding: Sliding is permitted; however, any slide with cleats up, or any slide deemed dangerous or intended to make contact with a defensive player, may result in a warning, ejection, or additional disciplinary action at the umpire’s discretion.
• Tagging Up: Runners may tag up and advance after a legally caught fly ball.

No Infield Fly Rule

Augusta Premier Kickball does not utilize an Infield Fly Rule.

All live balls remain in play until an out is recorded, the ball becomes dead, or time is called.

Section 8: Safety & Conduct

Avoidance Rule

Runners must make every reasonable effort to avoid unnecessary contact with defensive players.

Defensive players may not intentionally obstruct a runner’s path unless actively making a play on a live ball.

Deliberate collisions, dangerous play, and reckless conduct are prohibited.

The umpire may declare a runner out, award bases, issue warnings, or eject players for violations.

Home Plate Safety Rule

Player safety is the highest priority at home plate.

• Defensive players must make every reasonable effort to provide runners with a clear path to home plate and may not intentionally obstruct the base path without possession of the ball.
• Runners must make every reasonable effort to avoid unnecessary contact with defensive players. Initiating avoidable or excessive contact is prohibited.
• Collisions: Any runner who intentionally lowers a shoulder, initiates unnecessary contact, or recklessly collides with a defensive player at home plate is subject to immediate ejection and an automatic one-game suspension. Additional disciplinary action may be imposed by the Captains Council if warranted.

Player safety shall always take precedence over competitive advantage.

Alcohol Policy

Responsible alcohol consumption is permitted where legally allowed (this applies to facility rules and regulations as well).

Excessive intoxication, disorderly conduct, or behavior that negatively impacts the league may result in removal.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Augusta Premier Kickball is committed to fostering a competitive, respectful, and enjoyable environment for all players, officials, and spectators.

The following behavior is prohibited:

• Verbal abuse
• Harassment or intimidation
• Threatening behavior
• Excessive arguing with players, captains, officials, or league staff
• Intentional attempts to injure another player
• Unsportsmanlike conduct toward officials
• Any behavior deemed detrimental to the league or its participants

Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action, including but not limited to:

• Ejection from the current game
• Suspension from future games
• A fine of up to $75
• Removal from the league for a season

All disciplinary matters will be reviewed by the Captains Council, which will determine the appropriate consequences based on the severity of the offense and any prior incidents.

Ejections

Players may be ejected for, but are not limited to:

• Fighting or attempting to fight
• Dangerous or reckless play
• Repeated unsportsmanlike conduct
• Threatening or abusive behavior
• Refusal to comply with league officials
• Intentional unnecessary contact
• Any action deemed detrimental to the safety or integrity of the league

An ejected player must leave the playing area immediately and may not participate further in that evening’s activities.

Additional suspensions, fines, or disciplinary action may be imposed by the Captains Council based on the severity of the offense.

Any player who is ejected more than once during a single season will automatically be suspended for the following league season.

Augusta Premier Kickball is committed to providing a safe, competitive, and welcoming environment. Players who repeatedly demonstrate conduct inconsistent with these values may be removed from the league at the discretion of the Captains Council.

Section 9: Playoffs

Regular Season Point System

• Win = 15 Points
• Loss = 5 Points
• Run Scored = 1 Point
• Forfeit Win = 20 Points
• Forfeit Loss = -10 Points

Payoff Seeding

Teams will be seeded based on total cumulative season points.

Tie Breakers

If teams finish tied in points:

• Head-to-Head Result
• Run Differential
• Coin Flip

Section 10: Championship Night

The season concludes with Jake Smith Championship Night.

Championship Night includes:

• League Championship Game
• Team Prize Money
• Individual Player Awards
• Sponsor Activations
• Community Celebration

The event serves as both the culmination of the season and a tribute to Jake Smith, whose impact on the local kickball community continues to inspire the league.

Rule Modifications

Augusta Premier Kickball reserves the right to modify rules when necessary to improve player safety, competitive balance, and league operations.

Captains will be notified of any rule changes before implementation whenever possible.
