A Note From the Commissioner: Wow… We Actually Did It.

Opening Night has officially come and gone, and after months of planning, meetings, registrations, emails, spreadsheets, field conversations, and more than a few sleepless nights, Augusta Premier Kickball finally took the field.

Wow. I can’t believe we did it.

I’ve spent the last few days trying to figure out how to recap and put Thursday night into words, and I’m still not sure I can adequately describe what it felt like to look out across Eisenhower Park and see Augusta Premier Kickball actually happening.

Not being planned. Not being discussed. Not being built. HAPPENING.

And not even just SEEING it happen… FEELING it happen. The energy was there. The vibes were high. You could already start to feel the community coming together.

Players were checking in and picking up their inaugural-season swag. Teams were warming up together. Captains were getting everyone organized. Our umpires were prepping the field. Friends, families, and spectators were settling in to watch.

After everything it took to get here (literally… so much happening behind the scenes to get here), Opening Night was real.

And Somehow… It All Went Pretty Smoothly

You only get one first Opening Night, and I think everyone involved in building this league went into Thursday prepared for at least a little chaos.

After all, this is a brand-new organization with new procedures, new rules, new officials, eight teams, and nearly 100 players experiencing all of it together for the first time.

There were bound to be growing pains. Instead? The night just… worked.

But one of my favorite parts of the night had nothing to do with staying on schedule. People stayed.

Players arrived early to catch the games before theirs, while others stayed after the final out to cheer on friends and watch other teams take the field. And when the games were over, the night kept going at our League Bar, World of Beer, where players came together to celebrate a pretty unforgettable first night.

For months, we’ve talked about the community we wanted to build within Augusta Premier Kickball and for it to feel like one league, not eight separate teams that happen to play at the same place. On our very first night, we got our first glimpse of exactly that.

Augusta Showed Up, Too

And it wasn’t only our players who came out to see what APK was all about.

We welcomed Mike Adams from Augusta Good News, who spent time at the fields photographing our inaugural games and documenting the beginning of the league. Augusta Good News later published a photo feature capturing Pura Vida Kickers and Puke ‘N Rally as they played the first game in APK history.

We also welcomed a representative from the Augusta Sports Council, who interviewed several members of our Board of Directors about the league, what we’re building, and the energy surrounding our inaugural season.

One of our league photographers captured action shots and some pretty incredible aerial drone footage, while friends, families, dogs, and spectators filled the sidelines throughout the night.

For something that existed only as an idea a few months ago, seeing the broader Augusta community take an interest in what we’re building was pretty dope. …and hopefully, it’s a sign of even bigger things to come.

And the Vibes… Off the Charts

Yes, I’m the League Commissioner. Obviously, I’m biased.

But if there’s one thing I’ll remember most about Opening Night, it won’t be a score or a particular play. It’ll be the energy.

All night long, players and Captains kept coming up to me saying some version of the same thing:

“This has been great.”

“Tonight has gone so smoothly.”

“This is awesome.”

“I’m proud of you.”

Every time, it sank in a little more: We (not me) actually did this. WE are building the league we’ve always wanted.

Captains were happy. Players were having fun. Our umpires were enjoying themselves. The Board was stoked. New friendships were already forming. Teams were competitive while still showing the kind of sportsmanship we hoped would define this league.

And somehow, it was all happening under the lights at Eisenhower Park—something that, at several points along this journey, didn’t seem realistic.

This Was Never Just About Kickball

When we started building Augusta Premier Kickball in May, the goal wasn’t simply to create another place where adults could kick a yellow rubber ball around once a week. We wanted to create an experience.

Something organized. Something welcoming. Something competitive without forgetting that we’re all here to have fun.

A league where players feel heard. Where Captains have a voice. Where people show up early and stay after their game because they genuinely enjoy being there.

Thursday was only Week One. We have a lot of kickball left to play. There will be things we learn. Things we’ll adjust. Things we’ll make better. But after Opening Night, I feel more confident than ever that we’re building exactly what we hoped we could.

And that’s a pretty incredible feeling.

Thankfully, we don’t have much time to sit around reminiscing. We’re doing it all over again Thursday.

Week Two returns to Eisenhower Park on September 10, with four more matchups:

• 6:30 PM — Wasted Potential vs. Toejammers
• 7:30 PM — Puke ‘N Rally vs. The Replacements
• 8:30 PM — Pura Vida Kickers vs. The Comeback Kids
• 9:30 PM — Kicktease vs. BOFA

There are a lot of people responsible for what happened Thursday night.

To our Board, who helped turn a crazy idea into a fully formed 501(c)(7) nonprofit organization.

To our Team Captains, who trusted us enough to bring their teams along for the ride.

To our umpires and volunteers, who kept everything moving smoothly.

To our sponsors, who invested in this league and believed in our vision before we’d ever played a single official game.

To our Free Agents, who signed up without knowing exactly where they’d land but were bought in from Day One.

To our players, who showed up early, stayed late, cheered for other teams, and immediately started creating the culture we’d hoped for.

And to everyone who came out simply because they wanted to see what Augusta Premier Kickball was all about:

Opening Night is officially in the books. The first pitches have been rolled. The first runs have been scored. The first wins have been recorded. And the first chapter of Augusta Premier Kickball history has officially been written.

And if Opening Night was any indication of what’s ahead… we’re going to have one hell of an inaugural season.
