Game-Day Umpire Checklist

Our umpires play an important role in keeping every game safe, fair, organized, and fun. This page is your game-night hub for everything you need to prepare the field, manage games, enforce APK rules consistently, and wrap up the night.

Come prepared, communicate clearly, prioritize player safety, and keep the games moving.

Resources

Before the Game

Please arrive at the fields approximately one (1) hour before the first scheduled game to allow enough time for field preparation and pregame responsibilities.

  • Bring your APK umpire jersey and equipment, including your counter and plate brush.
  • Coordinate with the other umpire(s) to confirm arrival times, field assignments, and that everything is on schedule.
  • Verify field-prep supplies are available, including paint/powder, string, stakes, measuring equipment, and any other required materials.
  • Prepare and inspect the field according to APK field specifications, including bases, Kicking Box, strike zone, pitching circle, Attack Line, Coed Line, and other required markings.
  • Inspect the playing area for safety concerns and address anything that can reasonably be corrected before play.
  • Prepare the dugouts and surrounding areas as needed.
  • Confirm that all necessary game equipment is ready, including game balls, scoreboard, lineup cards, and the umpire box.

Game Time

  • Ensure each team has a lineup card and provide one if needed.
  • Check in players for each team before the game begins.
  • Identify and verify any substitute players.
  • Confirm all substitutes have registered and completed the required waiver. If not, have them register online or complete a paper waiver before participating.
  • Call both Team Captains approximately five (5) minutes before game time for the pregame meeting.
  • Review important rule highlights, game format, and any field-specific considerations with the captains.
  • Remind captains that sportsmanship and player safety will be strictly enforced.
  • Following the Captain’s Meeting, direct the teams to take the field and prepare for play.
  • Be firm and consistent in your calls. Once a call is made, communicate it clearly and keep the game moving.
  • Be loud, clear, and confident. Players should be able to easily hear and understand calls, counts, and instructions.

Timing Goal: Whenever possible, aim to begin games approximately five (5) minutes before the scheduled game time. Starting early helps keep the entire night on schedule.

During the Game

  • Enforce the APK Official Rules & Regulations consistently and impartially.
  • Prioritize player safety and sportsmanship throughout the game.
  • Keep the game moving and minimize unnecessary delays.
  • Communicate calls clearly, loudly, and confidently.
  • Be consistent in how rules are interpreted and enforced for both teams.
  • When a situation is not clearly addressed by the Rules, make the best game-time ruling possible based on the circumstances and information available. The ruling governs play, and the game should continue.
  • Do not allow prolonged arguments or disagreements to unnecessarily delay the game.
  • Note any significant injuries, ejections, disciplinary issues, substitute concerns, or unusual game situations that may require League follow-up.

After the Game

  • Confirm and record the final score.
  • Take a clear photo of each team’s completed lineup card/player list.
  • Document any significant incidents, ejections, injuries, disciplinary matters, or other issues that may require League review.
  • Send the final score and lineup/player-list photos to Becca for recording and publication.
  • Prepare the field and equipment for the next scheduled game.

End of the Night

  • Collect all Augusta Premier Kickball equipment, including game balls, scoreboard materials, umpire equipment, and any other League property.
  • Check the dugouts, field, and surrounding areas and make sure no trash or League materials are left behind.
  • Return the game balls and umpire box to Becca’s house, unless otherwise instructed.
  • Confirm that all game results and player lists have been submitted.
  • Report any equipment, field, safety, or other issues that the League needs to address before the next game night.

Umpire Payment

Umpires will be paid by Augusta Premier Kickball on Friday following game night via Venmo or direct deposit.

Quick Reminder

Our goal isn’t just to call balls, strikes, outs, and runs. Umpires set the tone for the game.

Be prepared. Be fair. Be firm. Be confident. Keep players safe, keep the game moving, and help make Thursday nights a great experience for everyone.
